Romans 8:39 – There is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord. (GNB)

It's time to send out those Christmas letters to our family and friends. We might call them our annual report, and if we were to save them and make them into a collection we would have compiled our family history. What will this family historian write in her letter this year? Now that's a challenge! If you lost a family member this year, then you will know what I mean. My only sister died of cancer on July 29 at 49 years of age. She will not see another Christmas, but fortunately we spent last Christmas together. In 1983, our family lost both my parents to cancer, and it was wise friends who convinced me that I still needed to celebrate Christmas, even though I didn't feel like it.

Our family situations may have changed this year, but one thing has not changed. The death of a family member won't stop Christmas from coming. We know that it can't, because nothing can separate us from the love of our God, who sent His Son to earth at Christmas time.

What will we write on our Christmas cards this year?

Prayer: Loving God, our circumstances are ever changing, and some of our families are smaller this year. Help us to keep sight of the fact that Christmas will come this year because You sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to be part of our earthly families. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
