John 8:12 – Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life." (NRSV)

1 John 1:5 – This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. (NRSV)

Sometimes late at night, I have problems sleeping, and feel an urgent need for something from the kitchen, which is a long way from my bedroom. Not wanting to wake other members of the family, I slowly feel my way along in the darkness, praying that I will not stumble into something and wake everyone.

When I finally reach the kitchen, my eyes are drawn to a faint point of light, a luminous glow coming from the clock on the oven. I stand for a moment focusing on the light, which, though only a faint glow in the beginning, becomes brighter. Soon I am able to see shapes of objects in the room, and can move, now free of fear. In the beginning, the room had been filled with darkness, but when I focused on the light, I was soon able to release my fear and find safety in the luminous glow of the point of light.

The light of Christ in our lives is much like the point of light on my oven — faint at first, but after focusing our attention on it, becoming brighter and brighter, until all fear is gone. The harder I concentrate on His light, the more I am able to see. I am then able to release my fear.

In our lives, no matter how great the darkness, it can never completely overcome the light of Christ. As followers of Christ, His presence lights our lives when we call on Him.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your light, which guides us through the darkness and removes our fears. Amen.
