Lennon and McCartney once wrote a song called "All You Need is Love". I remember watching them record it live on television. It was written as a European anthem to celebrate the first inter-continental European satellite. It was an amazing event, and even though the pictures were a wee bit fuzzy and in black and white, I felt a sense of history in that moment.

We've come a long way from those early days. Satellites feed our computers, our cellphones, the global positioning in our cars, as well as our televisions. We live in a remarkable technological age, which caused one ninety-year-old in our congregation to say, "Don't we live in a wonderful world?"

But despite the technology, we still need love. Lennon and McCartney got it right, but Paul said it more lyrically. The thirteenth chapter from First Corinthians is one of the most quoted passages in the Bible. You can't go to a church wedding without hearing it. Love is an important part of who we are as Christians — in fact, we can't be Christians without loving: loving one another, loving our neighbours, loving our enemies — as well as loving God first.

Whoever we are with today or whoever we encounter, let us try to show them love. Let us help them, support them, guide them, and encourage them. Let us remember that others can only experience a living faith when we show them a loving faith.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, all we need is love — Your love. You laid down Your life because You loved us. Help us today to love the people we meet, work with, and encounter. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
