Matthew 7:7-8 – Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. (NIV)

Matthew 6:33 – But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (NIV)

These words had meaning for me when at age 16 I gave my life to God and joined his church. I was an orphan at that time, seeking a way down the corridor of life that was my future. I lived in a small, rural community; I was in the tenth grade; and my immediate goal was to stay in school until graduation and get a diploma. My church and community supplied this need, and this first goal was realized.

Since that time, as I continued to seek, staying involved in another church in another town where a job had opened up for me, God has supplied all my needs for a fruitful life — work, a helpmate, family, friends, a home. I've never achieved riches, but there's always been a sufficient amount to meet my needs.

God is true to his promises. When one seeks his kingdom, he will provide it. The question we should ask of him as we follow his calling is "How can my life count the most for you?" He gave us free will — he does not compel us to live our lives for him — but when we trust him, seek him, and seek to live our lives according to his word and his plans for us, he shares the kingdom with us.

Prayer: Father, thank you for responding when we seek you, for opening the door when we knock, and inviting us into your kingdom. Amen.
