Daniel 9:4 – I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: "O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with all who love him and obey his commands. (NIV)

Recently, I was drawn to the book of Daniel, and, as I read the familiar passages, I couldn't help but wonder what Daniel might have written to his mother if he had been allowed to write home. If his letter was like the letters I read from my children when they were at camp, it would begin, "Dear Mother, How are you? I am fine." Then if I was lucky, I'd learn if they liked the camp food and if they were sleeping at night.

In Daniel's case he might write:

Dear Mother,

The old king died and we have a new king, Darius. He called me up today and questioned me about my prayer habits. The king's servants caught me praying to God and the king didn't like the idea very much so I'm in a bit of a predicament just now. The king threw me in the lions' den. However, there's an angel here with me, and he's protecting me from the hungry lions. I think the king will let me out again in the morning. So don't worry about me.

As parents, we can't protect our children from the lions' dens in their lives, but, just as God sent an angel to protect Daniel, He is able to protect our children from harm.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, You are a great and awesome God. You have promised to keep Your covenant with all who love You. Please protect our children in the scary world out there. Amen.
