Luke 24:32 – And they said to one another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? (KJV)

There is nothing like a dose of heartburn to make us realize our age! In self-defence, I have given up coffee, chocolate, fried and fatty foods, carbonated beverages, garlic, onions, peppermint, and spearmint. I have had to choose between short-lived pleasure or long-suffering pain.

Biblical heartburn isn't much different. The Scriptures speak of a way of life that brings peace. Too often we choose to ignore the wisdom they offer, and the result is pain and suffering.

We marry unbelievers, fudge the books, and worship sports, television, and each other. We use God's name in vain, mistreat our parents, and slip items out of our workplaces. We may not think that our behaviour is "a big deal" because everyone else does it, but it's a big deal to God. He sees all of our behaviours. He will hold us accountable for all our actions, and in the meantime, we will have lost His peace.

Prayer: Lord, speak to us through Your Word. Create in us a tender heart that burns with its truth. Give us the courage to make right choices in our everyday world, for when we do, others will recognize Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
