Galatians 5:13 – But by love serve one another. (KJV)

Luke 10:40-42 – But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to Him and asked, "Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But Jesus answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her." (NRSV)

I walked into a large home supply store, and there he stood, seventy-three years old, holding a smoke alarm in his hand. Four months ago, no one expected him to live through a reaction to the anaesthetic that was used to put him to sleep for knee replacement surgery. He has just been able to walk again, and was buying a smoke alarm — to replace a defective one in the home of a shut-in lady in his church. He was doing it yesterday — because he is to enter the hospital today to have the other knee replaced — and he did not want her to have to wait until he recovered.

My friend mows the church lawn, clips the hedge, repairs the plumbing, replaces the light bulbs, and does whatever comes along that needs doing. He is the unpaid maintenance man.

He has never taught a Sunday School lesson, he has never offered a public prayer. His name has never been at the head of a single church committee.

At seventy-three, he keeps the church facilities, and maintains a number of homes of shut-in women. He is just a servant. By love he has learned to serve others! Will you join him in this Lenten season? After all, he follows a servant!

Prayer: O God, Thou Who hast come, lived, and died as our servant, help us to learn to live in this Lenten season as Thy servants to others, with a sense of divine joy and excitement, and not duty. Amen!
