There is a stretch of highway that leads across southern Ontario known as the 401. The road leading west from the outskirts of Toronto towards London is on a stretch of very flat land. In the winter, if the weather is snowy and windy, it can be a treacherous piece of road.

The other factor is what we call black ice. This forms on the road just as the temperature drops to freezing, and makes a slick covering of very thin ice. We can't tell it apart from the blacktop on the road, so we never notice it until we are on top of it. By then, we have no control over the vehicle; neither does anyone else on the road.

We never touch the brakes — and steering doesn't help either. It is a very scary feeling not knowing whether we will hit another car, or if another will hit us. Everyone on black ice is out of control.

Our sins are very much the same. Often we can't see the sin hidden in our hearts, where Satan loves to work his cunning ways, until it is revealed to us, sometimes in disastrous circumstances.

In order to live a more righteous life, and to have a better relationship with God, who is perfect and without sin, we need to ask Him to show us those hidden sins — sins like the black ice we can't see — and then seek His forgiveness for them.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us in our sinful nature as we ask forgiveness for the sin that is hidden in our hearts. Thank You, Father, for controlling our lives, and for making it possible for us to receive our salvation through Jesus. In His precious name we pray. Amen.
