Deuteronomy 31:8 – The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (NIV)

As a child, I was tucked into bed for the night, and, some time later, I would wake up, and I would listen. Hearing nothing, I would slip out of bed, and, very softly, I would quietly creep toward the living room, just to make sure someone was there, and I was not alone.

As I ventured toward my goal, every board in the floor would creak, letting out a sound that was like thunder to my ears. Finally, I would see the light shining in the corner of the living room, and there would be my mom with her head buried in a book. "Ah! She is there."

Then I would make my way stealthily back to my bed, where I could rest assured that she was there, and I could fall fast asleep. Today, as I think back, I wonder why I had such a fear of being alone, for no one ever said that they would leave me.

Here I thought of God, and His promise that He would never leave us nor forsake us. Believing in God and the promises He has made to us, we should never be afraid, for, when God makes a promise, we can be assured it will never fail. "Ah! He is always there."

Paul wrote of Abraham, "Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised." (Romans 4:20-21 NIV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, we give thanks for the promises You have made to us. Let us never be afraid, for You are with us. You comfort us in all our circumstances, and, as believers, we know that You will never leave us nor forsake us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
