1 Samuel 12:23 – As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. (NIV)

When browsing the Internet, I discovered that November was designated "Family Stories Month." What stories would I be willing to tell about my family? I know that one of the ones my brother and I shared the last time we were together was about the time we moved to an old farmhouse, and the neighbours had kittens to give away. Being children and not having very many toys, we decided we each needed a kitten, but there was one obstacle. My father wasn't convinced that having two kittens underfoot was a good idea. Nothing we said changed his mind, until the day he opened a drawer in a bureau and discovered a pair of mice eating his prized sheet music. Amazingly, two kittens came to stay in our house before suppertime that evening.

On second thought, I think that the story I have drawn the most comfort from was the time my father told me how his life focus changed when he became a Christian, and how he has prayed for us children by name every morning in his prayers from the time he was twenty-six until now at eighty-four years of age.

Let us, as Christian parents and leaders in our churches and communities, follow my father's example, and remember to pray daily for our children and families.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we have been blessed to have children placed in our care, whether they are our physical or our spiritual children. Help us to pray for them faithfully. Amen.
