Hebrews 1:10-12 – In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end. (NIV)

With four distinct seasons in southern Georgia, the temperature is a popular topic of conversation. In every building are found two devices that keep us informed on its status. The thermometer reads it. It fluctuates according to its surrounding circumstances. The thermostat regulates it.

At our house, the thermometer is outside at the back door. In winter, our first action of the day is to check its reading. Plant life here consists of many tropical imports that grow well in the other three seasons, but cannot take freezing temperatures. These plants have to be moved inside.

The thermometer is checked regularly, hoping for a break in the summer, when the temperature hovers in the nineties. It fluctuates from freezing to baking, interspersed by near-perfect days in spring and autumn.

The thermostat inside our house remains constant. It is never changed by its surrounding climate. It remains constant, unless we decide to lower or raise its setting.

In our lives, Jesus Christ can be our thermostat. With him, our spiritual temperature can remain constant. He is the stable point in our unstable and changing world. He remains the same. His love for us does not change. Set on Him, our spiritual temperature will remain steady and calm through all the seasons of our lives.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, be our thermostat. Regulate our spiritual temperature, and fill us with Your peace. Help us to remain constant in Your love. Amen.
