"I flung it out!" I can still hear my aunt's Scottish accent as she voiced these words. She was replying to her sister's question about the whereabouts of her old chesterfield. The older sister had lived through the Great Depression and the Second World War, and knew harder times than her youngest sibling. She was used to holding on to things that had a bit more wear in them, or something she might need someday.

More and more, our society has become a throwaway society. Evidence of this is found in one of the summer pastimes — cruising the weekend yard sales. People visit one yard or garage sale after another, and search through someone else's junk, in hopes of finding a treasure.

Sin in the Garden of Eden caused a separation between God and humankind, and, without the removal of sin's stain, God will "fling us out" of heaven as garbage. However, according to Holy Scripture, when it comes to human hearts, God has made a provision so that trash can be turned into treasure. He did this by allowing His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die on Calvary to pay the penalty for our sin. All we have to do is to receive His living Spirit.

Prayer: Jesus, it is with humble hearts that we come to say thank You for the love You have shown to us, even when we were unlovely. Help us to tell others about Your great love for them. Amen.
