Matthew 5:14-16 – You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. "Still in the dark," the news announcer said. "One hundred thousand people are still in the dark in Nova Scotia." The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation announcer was reporting the news from Nova Scotia four days after hurricane Juan slashed through the province, ripping up century-old trees, tearing off roofs, and downing power and telephone lines.

It's hard to picture the devastation that hurricane Juan wreaked in my former home province in such a few hours: two lives lost, two hundred patients evacuated from one of the major hospitals, and twenty thousand trees down in one park alone. But the statement, "still in the dark," left an impact on my mind that went beyond the picture of people trying to go about their lives with no electricity.

"Still in the dark." How many people are still in the dark when it comes to knowing Jesus, the Son of God? How many people are trying to manage their lives without Christ? More importantly, how concerned are we about our friends, family, and neighbours who are still living in spiritual darkness? I invite you to pray with me as we seek ways to share God's plan of salvation with those who are "still in the dark."

Prayer: Dear God, forgive us when we have lost our vision. Renew our hearts to pray for and share Christ with those around us who are "still in the dark." Amen.
