Isaiah 25:4 – You have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm. (NIV)

Recently, I was walking my dog, Ben Nevis, a curious Westie, and, unbeknownst to him, a squirrel sat on top of a fence post and watched our approach. When we were near enough so that Ben could have been a threat to the squirrel, it took shelter under some thorny rosebushes. Here, the squirrel, in its shelter, partly hidden, and well protected from danger, stayed until we passed.

I smiled to myself as I watched the tiny creature, peeking out from where it was finding shelter. "You're safe," I whispered, and continued my walk. On the way home, I thought of the many situations and changes in life that come our way to threaten our safety: loss of jobs, failing health, and family concerns, to name a few. Sometimes these problems threaten to overwhelm us, but we do not have to fear, for our God has promised to be our shelter from the storms of life. All we need to do is come to the hiding place He has provided, and rest until the storm passes by.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for the shelter You have provided. Help us to come to You, and find rest and safety. Amen.
