Psalm 139:8-10 – If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me; your right hand will hold me fast. (NIV)

When travelling through the Rocky Mountains in the spring, I scribbled some words in my "pigpen", a small notebook I carry with me. This book contains tiny scribbles and scraps of notes that I revisit later, and, if I'm fortunate, these nuggets become the inspiration for other writings.

On this occasion, I wrote, "This morning, the lofty mountain peaks are rising out of the mist, stretching towards the morning sun. Their snow-white caps glisten like the jewels in a monarch's crown." The scene before me caused me to pause in an attempt to take in the breathtaking scenery. "God, you are here," I whispered.

A few weeks later, when I was visiting my grandchildren, the oldest child discovered a ladybug on her windowsill. Within seconds, the three small children were bent over the tiny orange bug, admiring its bright orange shell and delicate markings. As they watched and marvelled, I was again reminded of how God is in the small. "God, thank you for being here," I whispered.

Although there are wars, sickness, and trials around us, we have been placed in the centre of God's creation. As we look around, whether it be from the lofty mountain, or in sharing the marvel of a tiny bug, as seen through the eyes of a small child, we can all join in the words of the beloved hymn and sing, "How Great Thou Art".

Prayer: God, thank You for showing us glimpses of Your power and beauty. Help us to recognize You in these moments, and to take time to acknowledge that Your presence is all around us. Amen.
