Rotterdam is a beautiful city. Some of the most striking things that give this city its beauty are the pretty harbours, the magnificent bridges, the tall high-rise buildings, and, lastly, the finely sculptured monuments. Every Friday, I take a tram to my workplace, and, as it passes over the Erasmus Brug (Bridge), I see a giant monument adjacent, shaped in the form of an anchor. Standing out into the sky, it represents, for many, what Rotterdam is known for: the big port where ships come to dock, and let down their anchors for a while. For me, it is a stark reminder of the love of Christ, and the hope we have in Him by way of salvation. I sing softly in my heart the chorus of the song, We have an Anchor, whenever I see it.

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure as the billows roll;
Fastened to the rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour's love.

When we accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour of our lives, we are no longer hopeless but hopeful, being fastened to Him Who cannot be moved or shaken. He has gone before us, and has shed His precious blood for our salvation. While ships come and go, being anchored for a while, we are anchored permanently in Christ, and we patiently love and serve Him as we wait for His return.

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, we thank You for the hope and salvation we have in You, that is a sure and steadfast anchor of our souls. We pray that we may learn to trust more in You, even as the billows of life roll round about us. In Your name we pray. Amen.
