Psalm 54:2 – Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth. (NIV)

When we travel by plane on an overseas flight, I go prepared with blinders to keep out the light of the overhead video, and a pair of earplugs to cut down on the internal noise of voices in conversation, and the vibration from the engines.

This year was no exception. Upon our return home, my husband developed a cold that went down into his chest. He did nothing but cough continually. After a couple of nights with little sleep, I thought of the earplugs that I had used on the plane. I put in the earplugs, and guess what! They worked! What a relief for me to get a good night's sleep. Though it didn't help my husband, his medication eventually took hold, his cough subsided, and all became normal once more.

Thinking of plugging my ears to close out things that I did not want to hear brought to mind the things of God that we tend to close out. Perhaps not with earplugs, but we tend to shut out the things He has to say to us, by ignoring our reading of Scripture, or failing to listen in time of meditation. How I can drift off and not stay focused when I should! There is a time to unplug our ears and listen to the words of God, and a time to plug our ears from the things of the world.

Psalm 17:6 – I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer. (NIV)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, be present with us in times when we tend not to focus on You. Help us to be more attentive to Your words. Enable us to unplug our spiritual ears, that we may hear. In hearing, help us to do Your will in our lives, and to bring glory and honour to You. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, we pray. Amen.
