"Go deep into the medical record," my supervisor often told me. As a collector of oncology data, it was important to go deep into a person's medical history to find the truth. A note written many years ago about an allergic reaction to a drug might save a patient's life today. It might reveal information important to a patient's cancer history.

Psalm 36:6 – Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice is like the great deep. (NIV)

Luke 5:4-6 – When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. (NIV)

It is important to us as Christians to go deep into God's Word to find the truth, and to follow His directions when He tells us what to do. Just after today's scripture passage from Luke, Jesus promised to make Simon a fisher of men, and later chose him as one of His disciples. Jesus saw deep within Simon. He knew the kind of man he was capable of becoming. Even with all his shortcomings, Simon became Peter, the Rock.

He, in turn, went deep into the truths of Jesus, deep enough to give his life for the cause. When Jesus tells us to cast out into the deep, we need to heed His Word. Often the truths of life are buried in the deep waters.

Prayer: Lord, just as You told Simon to cast out into the deep, You call us to look deep into Your Word to find truths for living. Give us the faith to obey Your word. Amen.
