Lamentations 2:13 – For thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee? (KJV)

Via e-mail, a friend and I share our love of proverbs and wise sayings. Whether these words of wisdom are inspiring, funny, or sad, they are always thought-provoking. One day, while widowhood was still very new, and I was filled with grief, my friend sent this old Middle Eastern proverb: "No one escapes being mauled by the tiger of life." My first reaction was, "How true," but after pondering its meaning for a while, I asked myself, "Then what? Is there no hope?"

It seemed clear to me that this proverb had not originated in a Christian culture. If it had, perhaps it would have been written like this: "No one escapes being mauled by the tiger of life; who can heal you?" As I wrote this question, I realized that I was seeking the answer to the same question posed by Jeremiah in the book of Lamentations, "Who is in charge of our lives and who can heal us?"

Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, is often referred to as "The Great Physician". We received His promise of healing in these words: "This is my body, which is broken for you." (1 Corinthians 11:24 KJV) What a blessing it is to be a Christian! Our faith teaches us that when the tiger of life is mauling, there is hope. Jesus Christ is our hope. When all seems lost, His promise of healing gives us the courage and the strength to go on.

Prayer: Thank You, Father, for being in charge of our lives, and for the promise of healing through the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus the Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
