Matthew 6:23 – So if the light in you is darkness, how terribly dark it will be! (GNB)

The coastline of Nova Scotia, Canada, is dotted with lighthouses. Our tourist map showed a tiny lighthouse icon anywhere a lighthouse could be found, usually in small coastal communities of less than a thousand. Many tourists spend their entire vacation just visiting these monuments, some in working order, and others abandoned or made into museums.

Because the coastline of Nova Scotia is often rugged and rocky, the lighthouses were built to warn approaching ships of the imminent danger of running aground. Although lighthouses are generally now automated, at one time, the lightkeeper would have to man the lighthouse each day. Kerosene was carried to the top of the lighthouse every 4-6 hours, as the mechanics of the lighthouse were tended to. Lighthouses remain today as a testament to a way of life in the small fishing villages. I have read that the lighthouse is the symbol of the spirit of the sea in Nova Scotia.

But what of our lights? Does God shine through us in all we do? Are we now on "automatic", like the lighthouses of today, or do we tend our lights faithfully? There is so much darkness and danger in our world, yet we can show neighbour and stranger alike that there is a light in the world, the light of the Spirit of God in us. Let's let it shine!

Prayer: God in heaven, may each of us be a beacon in this world of darkness. May Your Spirit shine in us, so that others can see You through us. Amen.
