John 6:12 – When they had all had enough to eat, [Jesus] said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."

While installing a video projector at the church, we had to re-locate an electrical connection under the stage. The openings in the stage support structures were only 12 inches by 14 inches and it seemed impossible to access the wires. Then we thought of the unique gifts of a precocious four-year-old boy. Though he might have thought himself too small to help at the church, he literally scampered through the supports, and finished the job in a few seconds!

Likewise, God has a way of using our unique gifts in ministry — nothing is ever wasted. For example, in the sixties, I gave up a potential career in computer programming to go into ordained ministry. Little did I know that, in the nineties, God would use my unique skills to begin, as part of the Presbyterian Church in Canada's Internet ministry, an automated Daily Devotional, which would minister by e-mail to over 4,000 subscribers in over 50 countries, with a volunteer staff of five.

We should ask ourselves how God can use our own unique gifts today. With God, nothing is ever wasted.

Prayer: We praise You, Father, that You created each one of us with gifts, talents, and skills that are useful for the building of Your kingdom. Give us wisdom to know how You intend them to be used. Amen.
