Revelation 3:20 – Behold, I stand at the door and knock. (KJV)

Matthew 7:7 – Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. (KJV)

The beautiful little old church, where we hold our weekly Contemplative Prayer meetings, has quite an intricate configuration of halls and stairs to get from the sanctuary to the washrooms.

Awhile back, I found out that the doors along that route lock behind you when they close, and, should no one be in the hall, which they rarely are at that time on that day, you are out of hearing distance of those in the sanctuary. I guess that if one were going to be locked in somewhere, a church hall would be about the best place it could happen. However, my initial reaction was a temporary type of fear, and, after all, I really was anxious to attend the prayer meeting I had come for.

I stood there knocking and knocking until, ready to begin the prayer session, someone realized I'd not returned, came through the heavy door, heard my knock at the smaller one, and, exhibiting a very wide smile, opened it for me.

It was interesting that this experience should happen just prior to a time when I would go into twenty minutes of silence to open my heart and mind to just allow God to speak to me. Was it perhaps his way to make sure I would hear what it was he had to say?

He has told us that he stands at the door of our lives, and knocks, waiting to be let in. He has also promised that when we knock, calling on him, he will readily open the door for us, perhaps, I'm sure, with a very wide smile.

Prayer: Dear God, may we be open to recognizing how you speak to us through the many incidents we experience every day. In your name we pray. Amen.
