Matthew 28:20 – Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (KJV)

Psalm 90:1 – Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. (KJV)

Psalm 139:1 – O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. (KJV)

On my wall is a little poster of that famous bear, Pooh, and his friend Piglet. The words accompanying the notorious twosome are these:

Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.
"Pooh!" he whispered.
"Yes, Piglet?"
"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw.
"I just wanted to be sure of you."

The poster was given to me some years back by a friend. She had shared it with several of us who worked together helping others and knew we could count on each other for support, for back-up, for encouragement, for love, and understanding — for all the things that are encompassed by the word friend.

Although the poster may be classified as one of those things that gives us "warm fuzzy feelings", seeing it on my wall spreads a smile across my face, and serves as something of an affirmation, as well as a reminder, of what friendship means to me.

It reminds me, not only that can I count on others, but also that others count on me.

It also reminds me of a much stronger, deeper, devoted friendship — that of my spiritual relationship.

I know I have a friend in God through Jesus. He gives me so much, from the air I breathe and the ability to take that breath, to all so freely given in nature. I know He is with me to guide me in my movements, my decisions, and my thoughts. I know He is with me in the good as well as the challenging times, and I know He helps me help others. I know these things, for He shows me in many ways. I know I couldn't do what I do without Him.

As far as friendships go, I believe He gives us blessed assurance of His friendship.

I wonder how often, during our busy day, when things are fine and going our way, when we forget all the things that He portrays, He feels a need to come up to us and gently say, "I just wanted to be sure of you."

Prayer: May we be ever mindful, Lord, that the path of friendship is a two-way street. In Your name we pray. Amen.
