Several years ago, a friend of mine who had immigrated to Canada from Europe had asked a mutual friend of the same heritage who was travelling to their homeland if it would be possible for her to bring back some of my friend's family treasures.

This was done; however a vase that was a family heirloom arrived in many pieces. Although I'm sure she was upset, instead of harbouring ill feelings or throwing the pieces away, she went to a hardware store, picked up a cement compound mix and cast some stepping stones for her garden, into which she carefully placed the pieces from her treasured vase.

Her garden in itself is a work of art, and is now enhanced by the memorabilia from her homeland in her stepping stones.

How often we encounter situations in our lives where we think everything is intact, only to have something shattered into many fragmented pieces. What we do with those pieces makes a difference in the outcome of whatever it was that was broken.

Many situations are such that they're not as easily transformed as were the stepping stones, nor are we able to make the transformations on our own. When we need to pick up the pieces, we also need to put our trust and faith in God to give us the love and support of family and friends, and outside help if need be.

Prayer: May we remember to come to you, O good and gracious God, in our good times as well as those times when our lives are fragmented by anger, fear, loss, disruption and despair. Help us, and help others to help us, to pick up the pieces and create a new and meaningful life. In your name we pray. Amen.
