Isaiah 55:6 – Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. (NIV)

In our home, we have a total of three clocks that chime. One is a grandfather clock, which has sat for two years, not working.

The second is in the kitchen. It is a replica of an old schoolhouse clock. This clock was built by my husband out of scrap oak; the works were picked up at the clockmaker's long before he built the housing. It is the one clock in our house that is presently in working order.

Above me, as I sit, is another replica of a cathedral clock. This one needs batteries.

One might say the majority of our clocks have problems. When they are all healthy and working, they chime the hour in unison — sort of!

Some people don't understand how I can stand hearing all these clocks chiming at one time. Yet even when they are working, very often I don't notice them at all.

This brings to my mind how we subconsciously can tune out or tune in the things that go on around us. How often do we tune God out as he tries to chime into our lives?

We must pay attention and listen for His call.

Subconsciously, He is there for us when we tune in and listen, like the times in the middle of the night, when I stir and count the chimes to know the time. So it is with God. We must be aware He is there for us, and when we listen, He speaks, and when He does, He demands our full attention.

Let us never intentionally tune out or neglect God in the way I sometimes have our clocks. Let us keep in tune and in constant prayer with Him.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we come to You today seeking Your favour. May we be aware of Your presence in our lives, though subconsciously we stray from You. Help us to know you are there for us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
