Psalm 86:6-7 – Listen, Lord, to my prayer; hear my cries for help. I call to you in times of trouble, because you answer my prayers. (GNB)

Recently, my five-year-old daughter and I saw a cardinal out our window. That is not unusual, since we put seed out for the birds all winter, but this was the first cardinal we had seen all winter. I said to my daughter, "Did you know mommy can talk to cardinals?"

My daughter looked at me incredulously. How could I talk to birds? I explained that when I was still going to school, I talked to a cardinal every morning as I walked to the bus stop. I would whistle — two long, three short — and it would almost always reply. I'm not sure my daughter believed me.

God talks to us too, as hard as that is to believe. He knows our language. He hears us when we call, and He always understands. He speaks quietly, but He always speaks. Let's listen.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you know our hearts. You speak a language that goes beyond words. Help us to stop and listen. Amen.
