Psalm 131:1-2 – My heart is not proud, O Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. (NIV)

I awakened one day to find I was developing a cold. I wasn't feeling the best, but our granddaughter was coming to visit, so I pried myself from the comfort of my bed and got ready for her visit. I wasn't worried about passing the cold on to her because that's where it came from in the first place. I held in there, and we had a delightful visit, as usual. As the day wound down I was fast fading. Our granddaughter being on her way home, I prepared the dinner, while my husband suggested that we go bowling for the evening. I declined and said, "You go", which he did.

In the quiet of that evening I sat not really wishing to do anything. I surfed the television to no avail. Eventually my husband came in the door. His first words to me were, "How would you like to help me downstairs with that computer I'm trying to get up and running?" I thought for a moment and said, "No", knowing that a few minutes usually melts into hours.

I was a little put out when my husband went downstairs, leaving me alone again. I suppose you would say I was feeling sorry for myself, thinking, "He should pay a little more attention to me."

A little annoyed, I crawled into bed, reached for my Bible and opened it to Psalm 131. I read it slowly. My heart is not proud, O Lord, my eyes are not haughty — I took a breath and thought, "Oh?" Then I continued: I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have stilled and quieted my soul; like a weaned child with its mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me. I thought about this, took another deep breath, and found a comfort I couldn't express. Peace entered in, and any anger I was feeling was gone. What a calming piece of scripture and what a way to end the day!

Prayer: In prayer we come to you, O Lord. We find peace in your word — the quietness we need for our souls. Thank You for speaking out, so thatwe may find contentment. Melt away any animosity in our hearts. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus' name. Amen.
