John 7:37b – If a man is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. (NIV)

Several weeks ago, in Walkerton, Ontario, there was a tragic outbreak of e-coli poisoning in the drinking water. Several people — young and old — died, and many more were very sick. Since that time, the residents have had either to use bottled water or to boil their water before drinking it. E-coli has also been found in the drinking water in other towns, too — because of heavy rains and flooding. Sadly, our drinking water can become contaminated. Many of us, these days, use filters of one kind or another to purify our water from chemicals and other contaminants.

Jesus spoke of the living water when He said to the Samaritan woman at the well, "Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water, welling up to eternal life." (John 4:14 NIV)

Yes, tragic things can happen to us, but when Jesus is in our lives, we will live forever. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. "To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life." (Revelation 21:6 NIV)

Revelation 22:17b – Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life. (NIV)

May the words of today's music encourage each of us and quench our thirsty souls:

And Jesus said: "Come to the water, stand by my side
I know you are thirsty, you won't be denied
I felt every teardrop when in darkness you cried
And I strove to remind you that for those tears I died."

Prayer: Heavenly Father, be with the people of Walkerton as they deal with this tragedy in their lives and be with others who are experiencing flooding and contaminated water. Be with all of us as we thirst for You, the living water. May we never forget that You died on the cross for us so that we could drink of the living water and live forever. In Jesus' name. Amen.
