Matthew 6:22 – The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. (KJV)

There is a young gentleman who, for over ten years, has stopped by to chat at whatever volunteer booth I may be "manning". He's very friendly and helpful and often stays for up to half an hour. I've always been quite fond of him and recently he showed me the true face of grace.

We'd not run into each other for perhaps a year and a half. On this particular occasion, we greeted each other with a hug as always and I told Gordon how nice it was to see him again. We chatted. He backed off when customers came to the booth. When other friends happened along to chat, I readily introduced them to him. He smiled and said hello to each one of them in his gentle, semi-shy manner.

When his mother came along, he excitedly said he wanted me to meet her. "How long have you known George?" she asked. At that moment I realized how truly gracious he was. He'd not once corrected me when I'd introduced him by the wrong name, and I thought of the many times I'd corrected people when they've spelled or pronounced my name incorrectly.

You see, George is a gentleman who would be classified as a special person, or a special needs person. He is a Down's Syndrome adult. That has nothing, yet maybe everything, to do with how he allowed me to save face. He is a kind and gentle soul, eager to please and be helpful.

I believe God puts such special people in our lives to show us the true face of grace.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your people whom we classify as special. May we be ever open to the gifts they bring and the lessons they teach us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
