Recently I became a first-time grandmother. What a wonderful feeling! What anticipation! What a miracle! What wonderful news!

Sierra Marie was born on September 16th, weighing 4 pounds 9 ounces, and six weeks premature. A preemie! So tiny, so precious! When I first saw her, tears welled up in my eyes. There she lay, hooked up to a machine that monitored her every heartbeat. Her breathing was very rapid and shallow. She looked so weak and helpless. She was also being fed through a tiny tube that was inserted into her tiny little nose.

Because she arrived six weeks early, the doctors felt that Sierra should remain at the hospital until she was strong enough to go home. This was a very emotional time for my daughter and son-in-law, as they had to leave their little girl behind and go home, alone. Hours turned into days and days turned into weeks. During that time, my son-in-law and daughter had to travel back and forth from the hospital to their home, three or four times a day. What a sacrifice on their part! Finally came those anticipated words from the doctor, "Sierra can go home today!" I remember the joy! What wonderful news!

I also remember another birth almost two thousand years ago in a town called Bethlehem. A child was born, not in a hospital, but in a lowly stable. This child was born to live and to die for us — to be a living sacrifice — our Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. What joy! What wonderful news!

Luke 2:10-11 – And the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord." (NASB)

Prayer: Dearest Jesus, thank You for loving us so much that You came to be born for us and to sacrifice your life to make atonement for us on the cross. What joy! What wonderful news! Amen.
