Isaiah 9:2 – The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness — on them light has shined. (NRSV)

In the summer of 1998 I had the opportunity to spend a week in Oxford, England, on business, and decided to take a short holiday there as well. One morning I awoke to find the view out my bedroom window obscured by thick fog. I showered, ate breakfast, and headed off by bus to spend the day exploring London.

As we drove along the motorway, about halfway to London, I noticed the fog ahead begin to glow, and suddenly the bus shot out of the fog into a brilliantly clear sunny morning. It was as if someone had suddenly thrown back a heavy curtain. One moment all was fog and obscurity; the next all was sunlight and clear blue sky. It was like driving into a solid wall of sunshine.

As I go through life, I often have the feeling that I am surrounded by thick fog. But just when the fog seems to be totally impenetrable, the light of Jesus shines through. With Jesus beside us, there is no fog, no darkness that we cannot pass through. How fortunate we are to have a light that is able to drive away even the thickest of life's fogs in the blink of an eye!

Prayer: God, at whose word light came to be, you sent your Son to be a light shining in the darkness. Shine on us and illumine our way. Clear out the fog and darkness that surrounds our lives, and replace it with your shining love. Amen.
