Colossians 3:8-10 – But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. (NIV)

When my family and I moved into our new home, the previous owners had left a bunch of firewood in the shed. I started to go through this wood to see how much of it I could use. As I examined the wood, I found that I could not use any of it, because it was rotten. All of it was useless but I needed the space in the shed to store firewood which I had cut. So my wife and I decided we needed to get rid of the old wood so we could store the firewood we could use. It took a little work, but we got rid of all the old and useless wood and made room for the useful wood.

It is just not enough to say one is a Christian. There should be a change in one's life. We are told in the scripture today that we must rid ourselves of immorality. In ridding ourselves of immortality we can put on the new self. So it is out with the old, and in with the new. If the old does not get put out, there can be no room for the new to come in. If my faith is in Jesus, then my conduct should reflect that faith. I do not continue to live a life of immorality and still claim to be a Christian. It cannot be, because the old self should be taken off and the new put on.

Prayer: Glorious God, we are like the shed which still has rotten wood in it. We pray that with your help we may continue to clean out our immoralities, so that we may be renewed each day in your image. In Jesus' name. Amen.
