Matthew 6:34 – Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (NIV)

As a parent, it is easy to worry about our children. I worry about my son when he goes to day-care. Will he be safe there? I worry about the bad things which happen in the world, and whether I can protect him from these things. I worry about that college fund that I have not started yet, but know I must if my son wants to go to college. As a husband and father, I worry about my job and its security. If I lost my job how would I pay my bills? Is my retirement fund doing okay so that I do not have to work until the day I die? Yet when we read the Sermon on the Mount we find, in today's scripture, that Jesus tells us not to worry.

One thing I am trying to improve upon is knowing the difference between worry and planning. There is nothing wrong with planning for tomorrow, but when we worry about tomorrow and what it will bring, our trust is not in God. To trust completely in God will do away with worry. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus tells us to seek first God's kingdom and righteousness. When our thoughts are filled with God's will, worry has no room to creep in. It is important to remember that God's will may not include a big home or a nice car. These are merely objects we desire and worry over, but God's will is what we should be set upon. God will provide for us if we are doing his will. He will not abandon us and leave us in times of trouble. So I try not to worry about tomorrow, but instead to focus on what God wants me to do today. In doing this I find a kind of peace within myself. To trust in God and what he has planned for me is the great adventure and love of my life.

Prayer: Lord, we know we sometimes worry about things over which we have no control. We do not trust you and we try to do things on our own. May we always look to you first. We pray that our trust in you, instead of weakening, will only grow. Amen.
