Galatians 5:13 – For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. (KJV)

I have just come home from my walking group, with whom I volunteer, spending time with people in bereavement. We walked the sea-wall on the water's edge, and the rain was harsh, pelting against us. The wind was strong, whisking some umbrellas inside out. Our fingers felt like they would fall off. Although we had raincoats and umbrellas, we were soaked. By the end of the walk, we were chilled to the bone.

I was asked why I didn't just stay home.

When we are committed to a cause, its purpose is not served if we only do it when it is convenient, when weather permits, or when we feel like it. Grief takes no holidays. It takes hold, or it comes up when one least expects it. For those two hours each week, we are there for each other — whatever the weather. We listen, we laugh, we share — we care.

Volunteers in any field are working "according to the measure distributed to them", and in love, are serving one another.

How blessed we are to be given the gifts of sharing and caring by a God who places no time or weather limits on listening or on His love for us.

Prayer: We thank you Lord, for the opportunities to serve one another, and for the many choices you give us in which to do it. In Your name we pray. Amen.
