Hebrews 6:18 – Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil. (KJV)

A three-hour round-trip to the airport, to fetch some friends flying in from the prairies, passed right by a river where the salmon were spawning, so we stopped to watch the incredible, though somewhat heart-wrenching, miracle.

The river was low, making their moves more arduous than usual, but still the salmon struggled, propelled by the mystery of nature which calls them home in an uphill battle to lay new life before losing their own.

Some of the salmon were in pretty good shape. Others were bruised and battered; fins bent and broken; some, almost unrecognizable, seemed to have already been "scaled"; and there were those who were worn, weary and spent. Yet they continued, sure and steadfast.

Though they are cattle farmers, one of my friends found it hard to watch the beautiful and natural event of salmon going home to "leave life" before "leaving life".

From the moment we are born, we too, are "going home", our routes predetermined. Some of us journey through life relatively unscathed. Others are bruised and battered emotionally, physically, spiritually. Many are bent and broken, unrecognizable from sickness, addictions, loneliness. Some seem to live in a constant uphill battle, worn, weary and spent.

Though the salmon are pulled by a force of nature, our pull is to the spirit, our hope and surety of salvation, our "soul's anchor". When accompanied by Christ, no matter the veil through which we pass, strengthened by faith, our journey home is steadfast and sure; our cares comforted; our fears conquered.

This, we are offered. It is ours to accept.

Prayer: We ask that you accompany us on our life's journey, Father, as we wind our way home to you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
