John 1:4,5 – In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. (KJV)

There's a little church which I must pass on my way home, and it always has a saying on its signboard. They're all clever, but some stick with me more than others. One such saying read: "Shadows fall behind when we walk in the light."

I like that. I like waking up in the early morning and trekking out with my dog before anyone else is up, almost anywhere. It's so peaceful; sounds are so acute; the birds begin breaking the news of the coming dawn. You can actually hear the water rippling along in the run-off drains. You can soak in the smells of the morning dew and watch little lights flicker on as people begin to rise, signalling households coming to life. And it's wonderful to walk into the light of the coming day.

Even when it's raining and grey, one is always able to distinguish the darkness diminishing into some sort of light.

So it is with prayer. Though our burdens may weigh heavily and our problems may make us feel dark and grey, if we offer them up in prayer, our load begins to feel lighter. We start to feel the darkness diminishing into the light. And so it is in life. When we walk in the light of living with Christ, the shadows of our old thoughts, our old ways, our old feelings, fall behind.

Prayer: We thank you Father, for the many ways in which you let your light shine through. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
