Ecclesiastes 3:11 – (God) has made everything suitable for its time; moreover he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. (NRSV)

It took a woman to remind me ( yes, gently) that most things in life come in cycles, natural rhythms – the rising and ebbing of the tide, the waxing and waning of the moon, the cycles of the body which, in women, can be a regular as a heartbeat.

I seem to be learning so much from women lately. My deepening involvement in the Ecumenical Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women has allowed me to see a movement I may have missed, a dance from the dawn of creation, a sensitivity to life and love that is just barely visible at the male horizon of awareness and yet is as natural to women as breathing and just as involuntary.

What is it she said to me today? "I guess I should be thankful for being a woman and all that goes with it… sometimes feeling as if the very life of me is flowing from me. (I am thankful it will pass.) So many things come in cycles. We identify with them, they set the patterns for our lives."

Prayer: Thank you for all of life. Thank you for pain, it keeps me humble. Thank you for the joy of an 'up' and the gloom of a 'down'. Thank you for life -Spring melting into summer. Lilacs and bushes full of bloom. All around nature tells of your majesty and power. Praise and honour and majesty are due your name every moment of the day. Amen.
