2 Timothy 3:15 – And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

I love old, comfortable things. My home is old and comfortable; my furniture is old and comfortable, like sinking into my grandma's old horsehair chair. The dining room suite from my husband's youth hosts family and friends on festive occasions. Our friends and our kids' friends love to come here because it's like "home"; our friendships are old, and they feel comfortable.

Our old rock maple kitchen table and chairs were the first pieces of furniture I bought when we married, second hand, from a friend's grandma. It's been the center of many conversations at many meals, many birthday parties, and has shared many occasions of joy and sorrow. It's old, and it's comfortable.

The fur on my moccasins is wearing away and some might say I need new ones, but I like these; they're old and they're comfortable. I love it when my girls pass on the clothes they no longer wish to wear; they're old, and they're comfortable.

When someone asked as to why I used such an old version of the Bible, my answer was something to the effect that it was what I was used to. It's old, and it's comfortable. The printing is slightly larger than the one I used as a child, but the version is the same. It's the version I learned of the holy scriptures, and it's like an old friend.

I have tried the new revised editions, the Good News Bible, but I keep going back to my old one. It is my belief that no matter what version is read, people take from it their own interpretation of what God is saying to them. The important thing is that we read it, and try our best to live it. God's word is old, and his love, very comfortable.

Prayer: We give thanks, Oh Lord, for the many versions, interpretations and translations which make it possible to spread your word. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
