Hebrews 11:32-33 – And what more should I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets – who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouth of lions.

Mallott once commented: "Without heroes plain people don't know how far they can go." Who are the heroes in your life? Why are they heroes? What makes them so special you would wish to be like them? The first book I even 'won' for memory work in church was a story on the climbing of Mount Everest, and I had instant heroes in Sir Edmund Hillary and maybe more especially in the Serpa guide who led the way. This began a life-long interest in biographies, the stories of fascinating people who made a difference, like Booker T. Washington, Louis Riel or Queen Elizabeth I. The people of the bible became heroes to me: Eve and Adam and the dawn of Creation, Moses and Miriam on an Exodus journey, Esther and Mordecai out to save a people, Priscilla and Paul determined to win a world for the Lord. We need heroes to remind us of all we can be in Christ Jesus our Lord, and we need Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life for us to follow.

Prayer: Shall we, Lord, be faithless? Shall hearts fail, hands hang down? Shall we evade the conflict, and cast away our crown? We offer ourselves again in your service promising we will maintain, unflinching, one church, one faith, one Lord. Amen.
