Matthew 13:4,7,8 – And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. Some fell among thorns and the thorns sprang up and choked them. But others fell on good ground and yielded a good crop; some a hundred-fold, some sixty, some thirty.

One of the sheer delights of taking a "nature walk" on these West Coast Islands, comes in seeing plants and flowers flourishing in places in which they are not indigenous. The birds "planted" the seeds. Oh, I'm sure it occurs elsewhere too, but for a person from the prairie parts of north-eastern British Columbia, it is indeed a marvel.

So too, with some of the "seeds" we sow.

Sometimes we never know how many plants spring up from the seeds we sow, so we'd best be sure that all the seeds we sow are good seeds. For instance, were we to be gossips and bearers of ill will, the seeds scatter faster than fluffy old dandelions in the wind. A lot of damage can be caused by one careless sentence "blown into the wind".

If, on the other hand, we choose to plant the seeds of love and kindness, well, the effects just flow like a rippling river over rocks. Sometimes just a smile at a sorry old soul softens his spirit, or a smile at a tired cranky mother might move her to be gentler with her child. The smile sets the ripple, the seed has been planted.

God has given us the ability to make the choice as to which seeds we would wish to sow. For God's sake, and for "goodness" sake, let us choose the seeds of love and kindness.

Prayer: Be with us Father, in our choice of seeds, and also in our sowing. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
