Psalm 62:1 – For God alone my soul in silence waits; from him comes my salvation.
John 17:3 – Eternal life is to know you, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ, the one you sent.
Acts 4:12 – Only Jesus has the power to save. His name is the only one in all the world that can save anyone.

How shall I meditate?

Christian meditation must be centred in God alone, the only true God; in Jesus Christ, the only one who has the power to save; and in the Holy Spirit who makes it all come together. Silence, Scripture, Prayer and Time are essential.

Here are Bonhoeffer's key words of direction:

The words that come from God will be the steps upon which we find our way to God.

Accept the words of Scripture and ponder them in your heart as Mary did. That is meditation.

When we read the Bible we are to make a very slow quiet, patient, advance from word to word, from sentence to sentence. Try one short sentence, or even a word or two that grabs you. Then ponder this word in your heart at length, until it is entirely within you, and has taken possession of you.

Such meditative reading of Scripture leads directly to prayer. Repeating God's words after him, we begin to to pray to God. Ask Jesus to help you. He will.

Prayer: O Lord God, I have just read a mass of words. Help me to find the ones that you have chosen especially for me today. Keep me keen to follow through on this adventure of getting to meet you and know you on a daily basis. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
