Micah 6:8 – What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.

Henry James was one of those strange philosophers who would use twenty words where one would do, and who would speak in riddles when plain speaking was necessary. When his nephew Billy was leaving home, Henry James called him aside to give him counsel. The boy prepared for some convoluted philosophy, but what he received were these words of wisdom he has never forgotten:

There are three things that are important in human life. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. The third is to be kind.

As many of our young people prepare for various graduations, maybe these words of wisdom from the past will guide them into the future.

Prayer: Gracious God, teach us lessons that will stay with us for life – words of wisdom and words of kindness. Help us to use our lives for more than the pursuit of power or wealth. Help us to be kind and loving and generous. Amen.
