1 Kings 19:11-12 – Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence.

There are times in Kedge (Nova Scotia's National Park on the mainland) during our annual wilderness journey that I simply go off by myself to see a sunset and the only sound is that of a loon or the ripple of a passing bass, or the hum of a million insects, and each acts like the voice of silence reminding me that I have left the babble behind. I have come with those closest — my family — to be, to seek out a quiet place of solitude,
no, not the woods and the water
but another quiet place, deep within
where the only voice is the still small voice of God.
This is the secret recess of a soul that needs the sounds of silence to know anew the presence of God.

Prayer: Help me this day to find the time to be in solitude with my Saviour and to breath deeply of that life that eludes the maddening crowds that march to the Muzak that never gives solitude or silence. Amen.
