John 8:32-36 – And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, 'You will be made free'?" Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed." (NKJV)

What is the truth? According to one dictionary, the word truth is defined as "the quality or state of being true." But what does that mean?

A woman was brought before Jesus. The teachers of the law knew about her. She should have been stoned. The law said so. But she was faced with the truth, her own weaknesses, her own faults.

She faced the truth. The woman knew she was wrong. The woman knew what the punishment was. If she didn't, she could have guessed. There were probably people ready with stones. And the law is the law, right? But Jesus, who is the Spirit of the Law, bent down and started to write in the dirt with his finger. But he also gave an answer.

His answer is the truth. Only those have no sin are allowed to pass judgement, and he is the only one without sin. When others judge you, you judge yourself. But when you have done something wrong, no matter how unforgivable, he is there. He'll love you and he'll forgive you like no one else can. And no bail needs to be posted. All we need to do is accept his gift of grace. It's a gift and we just need to take it or leave it. That is the truth.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that you are the truth. Thank you that the truth is what sets us free. Help us to live and be examples of your truth: to be forgiving and loving people. Amen.
