John 1:4-5 – What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it.

June Stevenson of Glad Tidings tells of sitting in a dark auditorium as one by one candles were lit in a gestures of prayerful support for the people of South Africa under apartheid. As each one shared with a neighbour the flickering flames of hope, the auditorium was transformed. Out of the darkness came light, a great light created one candle at a time, a light that defied the darkness and gave hope in a hopeless situation.

Who in that auditorium could have conceived of the transformation that would take place in short months as a convicted criminal became President and hope was born anew on a dark continent?

Who could have conceived of the Christ of God coming in the depths of darkness to bring light and hope to this world?

Prayer: Come, Lord Jesus! May the God of hope fill us with joy and peace in believing so that by the power of the Holy Spirit we abound in hope! Amen. (Living Faith 10.6-10.7)
